Big Birthday Kick-Off

We had loosely planned a trip to Hawaii for Dave and I, leaving tomorrow for the week. We debated bringing the boys as it would be fun to do one last trip as a family of four and the boys are so much fun at the beach now. But Dave vetoed that, and for good reason. It's his 40th birthday and it's going to be a loooong time before we'll be able to leave three kids at home for any period of time.

We booked our flight to the Big Island on miles and held off booking the hotel as they had a strict cancellation policy and we knew there was a good chance the doctor wouldn't let me take the trip, especially with some of the complications I've been having the past month. I had booked Dave's birthday dinner at Spruce for this past Thursday night. It's our favorite spot in the city and where we love to go for birthdays. Everything went well at the my doctor's appointment on Thursday morning and the nurse even said there was a chance we'd have the results from the ffn test before the end of the day.

The ffn test is highly accurate at predicting if you will NOT go into labor with a negative result. False positives can happen and therefore a positive isn't nearly as accurate (and often not worrying, but would definitely make you put your guard up and take it easy for the next 2 weeks, the valid period of the test). I wasn't expecting them to be able to do the test because of my complications in previous weeks, but amazingly everything was clear that day so they were able to do it. I was hoping I'd be able to surprise Dave with the good news at this birthday dinner, but alas, no test results yet. We were still in limbo about what we'd be doing next week, but had a really fun and delicious dinner.

We started with an asparagus salad and a raviloi -- Spruce's pasta is always so good.

Dave celebrated with a bottle of Chateauneuf-du-Pape from his birthday year.

Then we had the special of the night, the beef ribeye for 2. So tasty!

It was a really fun night. We were feeling even better (and a bit surprised) when the nurse called the next morning and said that the test was negative. We could go on the trip! It was a bit of a whirlwind Friday afternoon as the resort we were looking forward to staying at was now fully booked. Ugh. Most other resorts on the Big Island were booked too. So we started looking into Maui. Thankfully we were able to switch our flights no problem but they started debating over the resort. The one we wanted to stay at on the Big Island we had stayed at before and absolutely loved. No planning would've been involved as it's the perfect place to just do nothing, eat at the resort, relax. While we were debating on the Maui resorts, one of them sold out so that made our decision a little bit easier but I was still so nervous about spending so much money for a place that may be disappointing versus what we were planning to do. But I quickly got over that, we get to go! I should be so thankful for that and we're going to have a great time. It will be a different trip as we'll rent a car and have to go off-site for most dining, which has required more research, but now I'm really excited to try other places and explore a little bit more.

Next stop, Maui!
